MINE
I cut down a tree to steal its bark and carve you out. Chip by chip, piece by piece, I made you mine. One part safety, three parts courage, with a dash of luck for good measure. I placed you in the sky for safe keeping, to dance on the clouds by day and play hopscotch in the stars at night. My restless thoughts were wrought with impatience and desire, but I left you to wander the Milky Way on your own. You fought your demons, I fought mine.
On the darkest days I could still see you shine. To feel you from a distance is all it took to render my heart steady in a world determined to turn me upside down. So I kept holding on, knowing that with each trip around the sun you were inching closer to my galaxy.
Years passed, the yearning grew. I protected you at all costs, fighting the monsters that threatened to steal you from my orbit. To know you is to love you, and darling I knew you well. Like the palm of my hand, I could recite every line on your face without a breath of hesitation.
The day came when you were placed in my arms, and I felt my purpose ignite. This heart has been charred, but you reached in to rescue my ashes from the fire. Like the desert begging for relief, you were my rain shower; cleansing me of soot and polishing my skin to glow with the luster of a second chance.
